At midnight the eruption began. But as it turns out this morning it's not under the glacier but just beside it. That is a very fortunate turn of events because then there is less chance of a big flood. An eruption under the glacier often cause a 3000-30000 m³/s water flow when the ice melts bringing along with it what looks like small ice cubes but are in fact ice bergs the size of huge apartments buildings. The hundreds of people that fled the lowlands were evacuated because possibilities of a flood. They are not taking any risks and the roads in the area were closed. The crack in the ground is about 1km wide. It could have been much much worse. On the news this morning they talk about a small eruption with a lava flow. It's not explosive. All flights were directed elsewhere tonight and this morning the international airport was closed. The planes landed in North Iceland, Glasgow and Boston. This is just a precaution because of ash in the air. Planes with scientists have been flying over the eruption for hours tonight filming. The last eruption under the glacier in the 1800:s lasted for two years.
